Onyx is a variety of agate that exhibits just one colour but has alternating light and dark coloured bands. Although Onyx and Agate are both within the mineral chalcedony which is a microcrystalline version of quartz, the main difference between the two is the bands in the onyx are parallel whilst agate is curved.
