A pearl is formed when a layer of 'Nacre' is deposited around a tiny particle that becomes lodged in a mollusk, either naturally or inserted by a human. This nacre builds around the small object, slowly becoming a pearl. Mother of Pearl refers to the nacre that coats in the side layer of the mollusk shell. The Pearl and the Mother of Pearl have a very distinctive difference, the pearl has is smooth and has a uniform porcelain where as the Mother of Pearl has a mulit-coloured effect and a faint glow to it.
