The name Topaz is more probably derived from an island in the Red Sea which is also the ancient source of Peridot. Colours of the Topaz gemstone are rarely vivid. The most common colour is the yellow with a red tint and the most valuable one is the pink to reddish-orange. Care must be taken during polishing and setting because of the danger of cleavage. They are also not resistant to hot sulphuric acid.
