Lapis lazuli is a composition of mainly lazurite and commonly contains pyrite (golden speckles). It is sensitive to heat and pressure for that reason being it is generaly known to be a soft stone. Good quality lapis is highly valuable when grounded into powder form as it used to manufacture the pigments for "ultramarine" (one of the most expensive of all blue colour pigments) Common deposits are found in Afghanistan, Chile, Siberia and Myanmar
