The name Iolite is from the greek word "ios" (violet) Iolite is commonly known as water sapphire for the similar colours. Iolite has been knon as the viking compass as it is used to locate the sun on an overcast day. Reasoning behind this is because the appearance of Iolite changes under polarised light when viewed from different angles. Common deposits are found in Sri lanka, Kenya, Tanzania, India, Brazil and Norway.
